The Montessori Method

The Montessori Method of teaching was developed many decades ago by an Italian physician and educator named Maria Montessori to enhance the natural tendency of young towards independent learning.

Dr. Maria Montessori noticed that the children absorb knowledge from their surroundings and this observation led to the concept of Montessori way of teaching that revolves around the ideas that “the child creates himself/herself, revealing the person that he/she can become” and “never help a child with a task at which he/she feels he/she can succeed”. So, instead of giving information/instructions to the child, the teacher puts the children in an environment where the children can learn to make intelligent choices on their own.

In the Montessori environment, the teacher prepares and presents the material needed for child’s development. Each child is a different person with different needs and learning curves and is provided with an environment to learn independently by doing things on his/her own.

This method enhances the social skills of the child by providing him/her the opportunity to learn kindness, courtesy, and respect for the right of others.

In a Montessori classroom, the material is specially designed to be simple, attractive and self intuitive. The children choose their own work and they work at their own pace in a non-competitive environment.

Toddler Program

The toddlers love to work on sensorial exercises and motor skills.

This program is geared towards the development of language (including vocabulary building, rhyming, sequencing, opposites) and motor skills.

The teacher sets the sequence for the day’s events in the classroom and provides opportunity for learning. The sessions are limited to 30 minutes duration since the toddlers have a limited attention span.

A lot of fun and play is, of course, part of the day to keep the day interesting.

Pre-elementary School Program

During this age, the children show an inclination towards exercises involving writing, reading and hand eye co-ordination. The plan helps the children perform tasks that increase these skills and develop concentration.

These skills, which children develop during pre-school years, help them tremendously during their elementary school program and later life.

Class Structure

The classes are divided in 5 major areas:

Practical life

These exercises teach children to take care of the "self" and the environment by improving coordination, working habits, concentration, and attention span of a child.

Sensorial

These exercises sharpen the children’s five senses by enhancing the skills to compare and judge. They also build concentration and hand-eye coordination. The self-corrective material allows the children to learn from their mistakes.

Language Arts

Good language skills are needed to learn any other subject and no subject, including science, math, history etc, can be learnt unless basic language is understood properly.

Picture cards, picture books, and movable alphabets are used to teach phonics to ensure that the children start reading at an early age.

Mathematics

Children learn sequencing, recognition, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division during these exercises.

Cultural

The children learn about the history, geography, land and water forms, and science through various exercises and experiments.

Other Activities

We teach children Music and Spanish. Children are given opportunity to play outside and explore the real world objects.
